Islay distillery founded in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston on the island’s south coast beside the Kilbride Stream. It still floor-malts barley on site and cold-smokes it over peat in kilns built in 1840 before drying; seven copper stills handle double distillation. Much maturation is in ex-bourbon casks by the sea. Distillery tours, a museum, shop and bar are open to visitors.
